Dr. Paul Chinen is currently the Assistant Professor of Oboe at º£½ÇÆÆ½â°æ, where he is a member of the resident woodwind quintet, Camerata Quintet and Camerata Nova contemporary woodwind quintet. He teaches courses in chamber music, woodwind methods and courses in the general music education curriculum. He also serves as Second Oboe with Orchestra Iowa in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Prior to his appointment at º£½ÇÆÆ½â°æ, Dr. Chinen was Principal Oboe of the Great Falls Symphony and a member of the Chinook Winds Woodwind Quintet. He previously held positions as Associate Principal Oboe with the Helena Symphony and as Second Oboe/English Horn with both Florida Grand Opera and the Palm Beach Symphony. Additional performances include appearances with the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra, Billings Symphony Orchestra, Greenville Symphony, Miami City Ballet, American Festival Pops Orchestra, Miami Symphony, South Florida Symphony, and the New World Symphony.

An active soloist, Dr. Chinen gave the world premiere of Robert W. Smith’s Cosmic Harmonies with the º£½ÇÆÆ½â°æ Wind Ensemble in February 2023 and has appeared as guest soloist with the South East Iowa Symphony performing Jean Françaix’s L’Horloge de Flore (Flower Clock). He has also been featured as a soloist with the Great Falls Symphony and the Lynn Conservatory Philharmonia. He can be heard as Principal Oboe on multiple NAXOS recordings, including Gottsch: Sunset/Princess Yurievskaya with the South Florida Symphony and Gershwin, Tower, Piston, Harbison: Orchestral Works with the National Orchestral Institute Philharmonic.

Originally from Honolulu, Hawai‘i, Dr. Chinen earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Miami Frost School of Music, where he served as a graduate teaching assistant and fellow in the Henry Mancini Institute. He holds a Master of Music from the Lynn Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor of Music from George Mason University, where he also studied classical saxophone.

During the summer months, Dr. Chinen has performed at numerous festivals nationwide and abroad, including the Kent Blossom Music Festival, National Orchestral Institute, Hot Springs Music Festival, Vancouver Summer Orchestra Institute at Whistler, and Talis Music Festival. He has previously served on the faculty of the Pacific Music Institute in Honolulu and the Judith Lapple Summer Woodwind Camp in Fairfax, Virginia.
